Korean-based Mando America Expands Opelika, Alabama Plant
04/20/2012
Workers at the plant produce brake corner modules, brake calipers, suspension modules and steering systems. The firm estimates it will hire 30 additional employees to its workforce of 570 at its Northeast Opelika Industrial Park location, bringing the firm's total investment to $160 million.
A Mando spokesman said the firm wants its Alabama plant to eliminate the necessity of importing parts from Korea. Mando will supply auto parts to the USA's three biggest carmakers, as well as to Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama through its Alabama factory.
Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller expressed his appreciation for Mando's continued investment in Opelika. He said "we are extremely honored that Mando continues to invest in Opelika and grow their business here. Mando is one of Opelika's largest employers and a valued corporate citizen in our community and we appreciate our partnership with them.
As an incentive to expanding its facility and creating additional jobs, Opelika City Council approved a series of property and construction tax breaks.
Governor Robert Bentley said "Mando is now one of Opelika's largest manufacturing employers with more than 600 workers and is an asset to the area's economy. We will be here to assist through the Alabama Department of Commerce as they continue to grow and employ Alabama citizens."
